A Brief History of...Mr.Sagan + Carbon

It was the brilliant American scientist, Carl Sagan, who had been studying atmospheres of far away planets when he decided to study planet Earths atmosphere instead, in the 70's/80's, that lead him to the issue of climate change.

In 1985, he gave a very clear speech to congress, concerning the subject, but appeared largely ignored.  It would appear the very human habit of ignoring 'elephant in the room' applied. ( or in the case below of a film on same principle : "dont look up" is about solving the problem of an oncoming planet destroying asteroid strike by.... not looking up !

Current atmospheric carbon (in form of carbon dioxide) parts per million (ppm) is around 415 today, that is a whopping approx 45% increase from pre industrial levels of around 280. Parts per million (ppm) is a bit of a weird one to comprehend, but a human can detect 5 ppm of ammonia in the air......so if it was ammonia, we would be able to smell the change dramatically.

Most are not aware that the biggest extinction event on earth we know of , (no, not the Jurassic dinosaur event), but  250 million years ago (Permian–Triassic)  when atmospheric carbon dioxide  hit around 2,000 ppm after suspected ocean size volcanoes in northern Russia fired off.

An incredible 96% of species then existing on Earth were lost.

Today, 2020's, we are burning 100 million barrels of oil a day, equivalent to multiple volcanoes firing off.

In 2021 48 volcanoes were active, releasing 1 x billion tons of carbon into the atmosphere compared with human output of 35 billion tons, which suggests (totally non scientifically and large margin of error) we are burning equivalent of 1,680 volcanoes firing every day (48 x35).

See the data link below for more reliable and peer reviewed information (comparing homo sapiens related CO output with volcanos).
